Many of us are animal lovers and the symbiotic relationship between mankind and domestic animals goes back for many millennia. A natural bond has formed which has been good for both man and beast. Few of us are impervious to the pleasures companionship with dogs and cats can bring. Working with dogs is a very popular hobby; particularly bird dogs and herding dogs as well as guide dogs for the blind. One of the great joys of horseback riding is sharing the adventure with a responsive horse. Horses can be wonderful companions and one does not need to be able to talk in order to share an experience. Happy, well treated horses seem to enjoy the pleasure of a brisk gallop at least as much as their riders. If they are familiar with the area, the horses will make their anticipation obvious as they approach a stretch where they are used to opening up into a gallop and will also make their disappointment very obvious if they are held back in those places where they wanted to run.

People can get attached to inanimate objects like automobiles, but their feelings are in no way reciprocated by these heartless, insensate chunks of metal and plastic. They are impervious to praise or affectionate pats after a brisk turn on the freeway. Horseback riding on the other hand provides us with an appreciative companion who clearly reacts to either our approval or disapproval.
